"I Said I WANT a Wii!"

I got a nice chuckle over VK's post about the Great Wii Debate in her home. My wife went at 4 in the morning to get in line right before Christmas to get one of these for our eldest son. A testament to a mother's love, fer sure. He plays it now and then but he's been occupied lately with writing the plot synopsis for the latest Dune book on Wikipedia (I'm impressed).

The Wii is internet ready with wireless capability. They have a mini-browser based on Opera. One day #1 son wants to show me something on the Wii over the internet. I was puzzled as to how he had connected to our wireless router since he had not asked me for any info (I don't broadcast SSID and use WPA-PSK encryption so he would've needed the key). Turns out he had just browsed for an access point, found a neighbor's unsecured router and was getting to the net courtesy of our unsuspecting neighbor. I promptly gave him the info he needed to connect to our router since I view access point poaching as an egregious offense.

A long way around the barn to get to my bemusement at VK's existential crisis over the word "forbid." The man who was best man at my wedding once told me that I gave my wife way too much freedom. He was one of those who took the biblical directive for husbands to be head of their household as a mandate for dictatorship. I told him I thought it was a good idea to say "yes" as often as possible so that when you had to say "no" she understood you really meant it.

I think I'm going to have to have a long talk with #2 son soon. Lately, when there's been any discussion about a point of disagreement between my wife and myself, he says I should just tell her to submit. This cracks me up but I don't want him to get the warped view of a husband's role as head of the family common in some Christian circles.

Reading one of my homeschooling mags last night I ran across an article about being a "submissive" wife which -- as you pointed out -- is rather warped in some Christian circles.

In this one, the woman's family was getting ready to go out to eat dinner. She had a particular restaurant in mind that she wanted to go to, and her husband had another one in mind.

"But, honey," she asked, "don't you love the lasagna at Gino's better? Remember how much we enjoyed the meal there last time?"

I read that and couldn't help snort. "Submissive"? That's text-book passive aggressive.

I'll stick with outright laughter when faced with senseless directives "forbidding" me to get something as innocuous as a game system.
