Mrs. Metal Dad left on Sunday for her annual "Pedal Across Wisconsin." Our daughter started summer camp today. She was supposed to start yesterday but the storms that rolled through this weekend knocked out power to the facility where the camp is running so she started today. Mrs. Metal Dad's twin sister, who i fondly refer to as "my other wife" is helping hold down the home front.
The camp is run by SEASPAR, and we were fortunate that the fee for camp was reimbursed by the Ray Graham Association's Respite Voucher Program. We are fortunate because on June 12, 2009 Ray Graham Association for People with Disabilities, as well as many other human service agencies across the state, were notified by the State of Illinois that funding for multiple human service programs is being completely eliminated effective July 1, 2009. These are vital respite, residential and vocational services for people with disabilities and their families. Click here to read the press release. For Ray Graham Association (RGA), the programs affected by these cuts include:
· The Respite Voucher Program
· Bednorz Residential Respite
· Group Respite
· Regular Work
· DuPage Workgroup
· Department of Human Services funded Supported Employment
· The Supported Living Arrangement
Given my pretty conservative, libertarian leanings I do not view entitlement programs as an inalienable right. On the other hand, since I pay my fair share of taxes I do not feel guilty taking advantage of such programs if they can be of benefit to our daughter. I feel badly for families and individuals who are very dependent on these services and are being cut-off because the state government in Illinois is incredibly corrupt and inefficient. Illinois ranks something like 47 out of the 50 states in services for special needs children and their families.
