Yesterday the subject of the film 50 Shades of Grey came up. I think an ad popped up on the television. Mrs Metal Dad expressed not having any interest in it. I agreed with her but for different reasons. I expressed my operating principle that films, books, music, or television shows which are very popular are usually not very good because they appeal to the lowest common denominator. This point of view rankles her to no end. She tells me, "You're no different or better than anyone else. Why would you think that way?" I said, "Because it's typically true. Look at what's big on television, reality shows and stupid comedies." She then pointed out some things I like that are generally popular. She left for work and I carried on with my day.
I love hardcore, grindcore, black metal, and drone music. Not everyone likes these genres and that's just fine with me. Go on and listen to your Taylor Swifts and Kanye Wests. I'll pass, thank you.
So later on I texted her and said, "In regards to me liking media that may be generally popular I think it's merely a case of the unwashed masses catching up with my impecable tastes."
I'm pretty sure she remains unconvinced.
