Mowing the lawn today was listening to Todd Rundgren's Something/Anything? and got me thinking about ethnicity. I suppose I would be considered Mexican-American since my mother was a first generation Mexican-American. Dad was a generic East Texas caucasian hillbilly. Mom always considered herself white since she wasn't black or Asian.
To be honest my ethnicity has never been something that concerned me a great deal. I'm neither ashamed or proud of my ethnic origins. They are what they are. The only time I will draw attention to it is if I think it may annoy someone. I don't speak Spanish. I think Mom didn't teach us because the teachers in her West Texas town convinced her to downplay her Mexican origins in order to get ahead.
I remember sitting in the Houston airport waiting on a connecting flight watching Mexicans and cowboys stroll through the airport and thinking to myself, "There's my heritage, both sides."
