Between heart attacks, CABG, both sons out of the house, and getting older I haven't been to a show in ages. Did go see #2 Son play a small club in Chicago with some of his friends last year. I'm pretty sure the last show I went to was a Madball/Suicidal Tendencies show at the House of Blues with #2 Son and one of his friends a few years ago.
So I was really jazzed to be going to see Sunn O))) with Hissing and Big|Brave last Tuesday at Thalia Hall in Chicago. #1 Son took the night off from work so he could go with me. We got to see both opening acts. They were good. We really liked Big|Brave. They pretty much defy easy genre classification. Stunning, massive sound will give way to moody atmospherics. Big|Brave uses silence and quiet as well as they use loudness.
The stage cleared and the anticipation for Sunn O))) began. Fog/smoke began to fill the room and soon the GrimmRobed members started to take their places on stage. Attila Csihar began to vocalize a combination of chants, screams, and guttural voicings which went on for awhile. Soon a massive wall of sound emanated from the other musicians. It was a palpable, physical sensation. Long, slow drones which hung in the air would wash the crowd in waves. I can't imagine hearing them without ear plugs. My son said he took his out at one point and it was painful. I wasn't that brave. They continued creating these incredible soundscapes for another hour or so. Attila had left the stage at one point and returned wearing a spiked head dress and a cape and clothing covered with some reflecting material. They played some more and then it was over. The house lights came up and the crowd began to file out.
My chest was sore from the punishing volume. My son and I got his car and drove back to my house. We were both glad that we finally had the chance to see this band. It was quite an experience. A tip of the hat to #2 Son and his Significant Other who bought me the tickets.
