Sad News

I just found out that the youngest son of a couple we knew years ago died recently. Mrs. Metal Dad and I had him and his older brother in a Sunday School class we taught many, many years ago. The boys were in junior high around the time our sons were born. The family had moved from this area and I think the last time we saw them was at the funeral of one of our close friends quite a few years past.

If you're inclined to prayer, keep these parents in mind. If you don't pray, please keep a good thought for them.

Are You Ever Too Old to Rock?

Alex writes in Flaming Pablum's The Dad Zone about being in his Forties and dealing with the implications that some things are off limits due to his age.

Reminds me of some of the conversations I have with Mrs. Metal Dad who often wonders aloud, "When are you going to grow up?" or the popular, "How many black hoodies do you really need?" To which I invariably reply, "How many are there?"

Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat sums it up for me when he sang, "I might be an adult but I'm a minor at heart." Unlike Alex, I stay out of the pit at shows for the most part. The two main reasons being I'm too old and slow to be in there and both of my sons have promised they will never go to a show with me again if I get in the pit.

P.S You really should be reading Flaming Pablum. It's good reading.

A few Fridays ago I posted a picture of our friend, Laura, and wondered aloud where she was. Lo and behold, last week I get an email informing me of a CD release party for Kelly McGuire and Laura Bley's Face to Face at Lilly's Lounge at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, IL. I'm looking forward to hearing my friend sing this weekend.

Postscript to "Shameless Plug"

I went to watch #2 son's band, The Unicorn Project, play last night. I might be a tad biased but I think they kicked some serious ass. The guy running the show commented how good they were, considering they're all just in their teens.

They were a roaring, sonic freight train and #2 son threw down big time. I had to restrain myself from tapping folks on the shoulder and yelling, "That's my boy up there!"

Halloween

My wife thinks that my siblings and I were horribly deprived because my parents would not allow us to go "trick or treating."  They always likened it to"begging" and thus we did not go out. They also would not let us participate in fund-raising drives for the parochial school we attended. They said we were going to school to get an education, not to sell candy.

My dad always bought honking huge bags of candy to give out to the kids who came by. I never thought it was weird that we didn't go out. I guess by that time aversion to conformity had been pretty well ingrained.

Migraines

VK's post about a nasty migraine reminded me of the film Pi.

It's a disturbing but brilliant film which I've enjoyed immensely in the past, probably because I don't suffer from migraines.
