One of my favorite methods of clearing the family room of my sons on the weekend is to turn to BookTV on CSPAN2 on the television. My youngest son expresses incredulity that I enjoy watching and listening to people talk about books. Tonight, after going to see "The Bourne Ultimatum" with #1 son, I came home and caught Carrie Lukas talk about her book, "The Politically Incorrect Guide to Women, Sex, and Feminism"
I was particularly interested in her comments about day care and how studies which document any negative effects of day care on children are routinely ignored, especially by the media.
I'm fortunate that I have a wife who thought it was important to be home when our sons were growing up. We made some very hard and deliberate decisions about how we were going to live in order for her to stay at home. We don't regret those decisions. But I think every family has to come to their own terms regarding decisions like this. I would never presume to judge another parent's choice in how they raise their children. And I sure wouldn't want the government (federal, state, or local) telling me they know better how my children should be raised.
I once believed I would never send my children to public (state-run) schools. I often said I would never hand my children over to the epistemological child molesters of public education. I've had to eat my words since both sons entered public school at some point (#1 for high school and #2 started in junior high) and I think it might have been better for them if they had gone earlier.
I'm looking forward to picking up and reading Ms. Lukas' book.
